Time is our biggest gift. Everyone gets the same 24 hours in the day and we get to choose how we spend it. I have been thinking a lot about the power of choice the last few years and I am constantly trying to challenge myself in how I think. This idea is not something that was taught to me growing up or in my early adult years in terms of how powerful my choices truly are.
We can act like life is happening to us, or we can be an active participant and make choices that will help fuel us to where we want to go. This is often an incredibly challenging switch in mindset, when we are used to acting like we have little to no control over our decisions in life. I lived in this mindset for many years and it is a dangerous place to be and a slippery slope to get out of. It is easy to believe you do not have choices. You have a boss you don’t like, you have a job that you aren’t in love with, you have debt you can’t seem to get out of, etc, etc. The list goes on and on. But there are always choices with how we choose to spend our time, despite our circumstances.
I don’t want to diminish anyone’s circumstances. Things are often incredibly challenging, more so than I can probably imagine. I know that I have been through my fair share of trials and continue to have them. But I also know that I get to choose more often than I think I do. Being the victim is easy. Being bitter is easy. Doing the hard personal work to challenge your mental state and believe you are more powerful than you think….now that is the work. As one of my favorite quotes says:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson
Time is a precious gift that we get to utilize whether we realize we have choice in it or not. We get to choose if we want to wake up early and work on a side hustle, bust out a workout before going to the office, go to a networking breakfast in the early morning, or hit snooze. We get to choose. You get to choose.
Watches have always been something I have worn. Ever since I was a kid, I always had a watch tan in the summer because the watch was one of the only accessories I constantly wore.
